Interested in the Keto or Paleo diet? Here's what you need to know!

What is the Ketogenic Diet?

The ketogenic diet or keto for short, is a very low carb, high fat diet that shares many similarities with the Atkins and low carb diets

It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis.

When this happens, your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning for energy. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply energy for the brain.

Ketogenic diets can cause significant reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels. This, along with the increased ketones, has some health benefits (read below).

What is the Paleo Diet?

A paleo diet is a dietary plan based on foods similar to what might have been eaten during the Paleolithic era, which dates from approximately 2.5 million to 10,000 years ago.

A paleo diet typically includes lean meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds — foods that in the past could be obtained by hunting and gathering. A paleo diet limits foods that became common when farming emerged about 10,000 years ago. These foods include dairy products, legumes and grains.

Benefits of following these diets

These diets can have many benefits, one being that they restrict food groups like refined carbohydrates, added sugars, refined oils and highly processed proteins. As we may know, these foods are the foundation of a poor diet that can lead to inflammation, weight gain and many chronic diseases. On the other hand these diets call for the inclusion of higher quality and fresher food types, like lean proteins, vegetables, nuts and seeds which are a great foundation for a nutrient rich diet.

How bone broth fits with these 2 diet types

Bone broth fits well with both of these diets because of its macronutrient make up being low in carbohydrates and higher in proteins and fats.  It’s an excellent addition to these diets because it helps with sugar cravings, bloating and can be helpful if you’re experiencing the “carb flu” when first beginning these lifestyles. It also provides a great source of collagen and gelatin that has a host of health benefits from improving immunity, supporting gut health, promoting weight loss and so much more.

Candace’s Opinion:

Overall both these diets can be challenging for majority of people to stick with in the long term, which can decrease its effectiveness and generally leads to weight gain (particularly if that was the sole reason of undertaking it in the first place). Our body’s generally dislike inconstancy and larger fluctuation in weight over short periods of time so it's key that you’re able to maintain any type of eating plan you choose.  In regards to the Keto diet, it's key that healthy and nutrient dense foods are consumed as opposed to the many processed “keto” products or poor food choices available.

Tip: Get educated around both of these diets and look at all the options available, to make an informed decision that will best suit you.
